The Better Part The Better Part is a black comedy based on a disastrous production of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth.’Scottish actress Nairne MacKinney travels from Edinburgh to Wales in order to play The Third Witch. She encounters superstition, incompetence, lust and envy from the moment she meets the rest of the company. To add to this, she finds herself haunted by a figure from Shakespeare’s time, a woman who claims the play-write once spotted her on a heath and based his Third Witch on her, thus trapping her in the part until an actress finds the courage to overthrow whoever is playing Lady Macbeth and step into the better part. Because Ella, who is cast as Lady Macbeth in this instance, is ignorant and hopeless, Nairne is tempted by the voice in her ear. Then there is Toby Carter, the irresistible actor playing the title role, who clearly fancies Nairne but who has a personal rule only to sleep with his leading lady.

The cast begin to experience mishaps and accidents. The ghost grows more insistent with every rehearsal and Nairne finds herself unsettled and ambitious – exactly like the most blood-thirsty of Shakespeare’s heroines. To discover how she overcomes the curse of this play and its ghostly witch, you’d have to read ‘The Better Part’.   ‘A playful and intelligent delight’ by fellow writer Patricia Ferguson. There has been interest shown by a film-maker who hopes to work with me on creating a film of this book.
